The food scene in our favorite Downtown Silver Spring neighborhood is about to improve with an announcement of a brand new Commas Food Hall inside Ellsworth Place Mall from GBT Realty and Cana Development (CANAdev). This latest addition to the nomnom scene will open in Spring 2022 on the second floor of the redeveloped mall. It is a perfect location in the heart of the busy downtown, a few steps away from the Regal Majestic IMAX, AFI Silver Theatre, Filmore, Red Line stop, and year-round farmer’s market. Looking at all the 3D renderings and press releases shared with us, we simply can’t wait.
Under one roof, diners will taste the world through various dishes from Ethiopia to Korea, Malaysia to El Salvador, Italy to New Jersey. The press release describes the new food hall as “A global collection for curious eaters, Commas goes beyond your average food hall as a never-ending emporium of flavors from around the world. Commas is your new favorite Silver Spring destination with a community of local restaurateurs and a long list of activities in one spot.”

Local DC-based architecture and interior design firm GrizForm designed a 13,000+ square-foot space with cosmopolitan architectural and stylistic influences. The beautiful new space will include seven vibrant communal seating areas, 12 local food and beverage vendors, a central bar, and an event space. The press release states, “Guests can order from various merchant stalls but enjoy their meals at any of the seven vibrant communal seating areas. The goal is to make this a destination for big and small events like nights out, book clubs, and more. Elegantly bringing the outdoors in, the concept features open kitchen installations with window peeks and chef counters, giving customers a look into each working kitchen. Natural wood furniture partnered with an extensive light-toned color palette and personalized branding from each merchant instills a fun atmosphere. Grizform’s Director of Interior Architecture Ashley Kirkland said best, “Commas is not just a destination for food, it’s an experience.” Specific brand and vendor names are yet to be announced.

The leasing team at CANAdev also manages Foggy Bottom’s Western Market and another food hall, The Bevy, in Bryant Street, NE (coming soon). In addition, they represent hospitality brands such as Ceremony Coffee, Bun’d Up, and Cava Mezze. Interested operators can inquire about opportunities via leasing@canadev.com.”
